Swift Awareness Walk – July 2023

As part of Swift Awareness Week, Jonathan Pomroy, wildlife artist, hosted a very special evening at Gilling East Village Hall in aid of the Swift Conservation charity.

Jonathan started by speaking about swifts, house martins and swallows.   He showed different types of nest boxes and explained how house martins make their nests from mud.   Jonathan painted sketches to show the way swifts wings move during flight.

Following the talk the group went outside the village hall where the local swifts and house martins put on a fantastic flying display.   We looked at other nesting sites in the village and were able to look at live webcam footage which was being broadcast from inside a swift nesting box.   We were lucky that a swift flew into the box whilst we were watching and were able to see it close up on the camera.

All profits from the evening were donated to the Swift Conservation Charity.
