Gilling East Village Hall – a short history

Gilling East Village Hall was originally the village school.  The school was built in 1897 and closed in 1981.  Many of the older members of the community started their education at the school. In the late 1980’s and 1990’s the building was unused and fell into a state of disrepair.  With the help of a number of grants and donations the building has been repaired and refurbished and is now a busy village hall for the community.  The work of refurbishment began in earnest in 2008 and is substantially complete in 2022.

We are very grateful for the financial support we have received over the years of refurbishment.  The BIG Lottery ‘Reaching Communities’ and ‘Awards for All’ have been major contributors, as well as Ryedale District Council, the LEADER fund and the North Yorkshire Area of Outstanding Beauty organisation.  We have also received funds from non-public bodies local businesses and individuals.  In addition to the financial help we have received we have been dependant on volunteer help from community members.

We would like to send out news of Village Hall events by email from time to time.  If you would like to receive these, send us a message by clicking here.
